During the developing process, silver halide is converted to metallic silver. Wastes that contain 5 ppm or greater of leachable silver are regulated as a hazardous waste. Usually, the discharge limit for silver into the sewer system is 0.05 ppm (parts per million). Before waste silver is discharged into the sewer system, it must be captured by a silver recovery unit.
